A solar generator is the part of the system which creates energy which can be converted to electrical and in some cases magnetic or mechanical energy.  The core of the solar system is the solar cell, or pv-cell which harnesses sunlight and converts it to usable energy.

Hybrid Solar Systems

A hybrid solar system is designed to work as a complete system, from solar generator to power converter to power storage and transmission.   Often hybrid systems incorporate other forms of energy such as wind power to balance the intake of energy depending on weather or climate conditions.

Large Scale Solar Power Plants

Centralized power distributed from large scale solar power plants or farms has been proposed as a solution to generating large amounts of power efficiently in a central location that has ideal collection conditions.  Typically large scale solar projects are optimally placed in the desert.  A hundred square mile facility would be massive, but it would also be perfectly positioned and in an area which can be easily secured and maintained.

The Desertec Foundation is proposing the development a solar power system in the Sahara which would dwarf the combined production of these facilities with a projected to build 100 gigawatts of power generation facilities in North Africa.  The companies involved are based in Europe and it may become the largest co-operative energy endeavors in history if development goes as planned.
